PLACES AROUND HOPEMAN

 New toon           -village to the west of Harbour street

Scaap                  -area occupied by fishermen on Mid, Dunbar and Farquhar streets. A ‘scap’ was a ring of stones where each boat kept live mussle’s for their fishing hooks.  The area was called ‘The Scaap’ due to the amount of shells thrown out on to the streets after baiting fishing hooks’ etc.

Peepies               – area where fishermen lived next to the park and harbour.

Granary              -Harbour street opposite entrance to park at brig. Now two flats and previously a net  store.

Old Mill               – Now Lancaster court on Harbour street. Before conversion it was latterly used for groups, dances and wedding celebrations.

Daniel Main       – Boatbuilder at the harbour below the Black Sheddie. During 1909 Don Main built the wooden steam drifter ‘Laich of Moray’.  The largest boat ever built in Hopeman

Sanny Findlay    – Boatbuilder at the Peepie’s with boats launched on to the beach. Some fixtures to assist the dragging of boats down to the water are still visible on the rocks at low water.

Skellies               – rocks off East beach

Perstock             -rocks off Sanny Findlay beach to the north east of the pier.

Coffin rock         -rock at the west end of the outer harbour wall.

Parpet  waa        -sea wall at East and North side of harbour.

Clochinpow        -hole in rocks next to sheepies loch where water spouts up into the air.

Sheepies loch    -where farmers came to dip their sheep to kill any vermin. There is one between Sanny Findlay’s bay and the East (Braemou) beach and another contained within the rocks west of the west beach

Pot-n-Pan            – two rock pools next to the Sheepies loch

Stinkin Hive        -rock next to the daisy rock

Stripey                -water burn from lodge road running down to East beach

Nessies               – rocks at the west point off the Prieshach golf hole area

Black Sheddie    -at the harbour where the older generations of men meet on a regular basis.  Originally a wooden shed painted with bark to preserve the wood and housed a weighing machine for the railway.

Pockram’s point -at the back of school above an old stone quarry.

Cairn                   – At Pockrams Point and erected for Hopeman 200 year anniversary 2005.  There is a time capsule within the cairn to be opened in 2105 (100 years)

Lodge House     -built as the summer residence of Admiral Duff during the early 1800s.

Playing stones   -area of flat rock to the east of the Nessie’s where children played. During 1942 four boys were playing there and found ordinance. It exploded killing two boys and injuring the others.

Romans face      -outlined on the cliff on the west side of Cove Bay.

Cobbins Road    -dirt track road from Cove bay to the Lossiemouth road

Water wells       -During the 1800s there were five main wells providing water for the residents. There were also other smaller wells around the village :-

1 – On Forsyth street to the west of the old Manse. Now under Manse Road.

2 – On Forsyth street to the East of School Road. Visible in house garden.

3 –  In the area of the Ice House. Now covered up.

4 – Fairy Well at the bottom of the steps from the school to the East beach.

5 – Braemou Well in the grounds of Lodge house on original path to Golf course.

Wells 1&2 produced good water but was kept by the farming community.

Wells 3&4 produced water contaminated by salt water and not so good

Well  5 was the best water supply for the fishing community .
